What I loved about this book was how honest it was about the difficulties of the ketogenic diet. It's not an easy one to follow, especially this time of year. Practically everywhere you turn, you're surrounded by carbs. But it's perfectly placed for people who have put conscientious eating somewhere on their list of New Year's Resolutions.
The information at the front of the book is very detailed. The opening chapters explain ketosis, which is a state of nutrition you're trying to reach by following this diet, and its many benefits on health and fitness. It was really fascinating to hear an actual scientific breakdown of carbs, protein, amino acids, etc that I'd always heard about in nutrition but had never really understood their relationship to one another. This was a smart choice by Santos-Prowse to get the reader invested in the information he was about to lay out.
Next, there's a series of pretty simple recipes that are based not on impressing company but on feeding yourself easily and within the tenants of the diet. I also love that the Kindle edition is available so I don't have to try to carry a heavy book with me everywhere! All in all, there's a lot of books out about ketosis, but this one does everything you need at a low price.

I tend to be highly skeptical of diet books, because I feel like a lot of them are mostly BS. But, like many people, I do want to eat healthier and lose weight, so I gave this one a try. Right away I felt like it was a different experience than some of the other books I've read--the author was fairly up front about his reasons for getting into nutrition and the fact that this isn't a crash-course, instant-results diet.
There's a significant section devoted to explaining how this diet is backed up by a medical understanding of how your body breaks down food. It wasn't too jargon-y to understand, and I appreciated a full explanation rather than some sort of handwave-y psuedoscience. I trust this author more than many diet advisers.
